What to Pack for a Nederland or Black Hawk, Colorado Mountain Cabin Trip (Any Season)

A practical packing list for your Nederland or Black Hawk, Colorado mountain cabin getaway — what to bring for hiking, hot tub nights, and high-altitude weather in every season.

Packing for a Colorado mountain cabin vacation is a little different than packing for a typical trip. Between the altitude, the swings in daily

temperature, and the mix of outdoor adventure and cozy cabin nights, it helps to know exactly what to throw in the bag before you head up to Nederland or Black Hawk. Here's a practical, no-fluff packing list to make sure you're ready for whatever the mountains throw at you.

Layers Are Everything

If there's one rule for packing for the Colorado high country, it's this: layers, layers, layers. Mornings can start near freezing even in summer, then warm up fast once the sun's out, before cooling right back down at night. Pack:

  • A base layer (moisture-wicking, not cotton)

  • A warm mid-layer like a fleece or light sweater

  • A waterproof or windproof outer layer

  • A packable puffer jacket, even in summer

  • Warm hat and gloves — yes, even for a July trip

This approach works whether you're visiting in the middle of winter or the height of summer, which makes it the single most useful tip for any mountain cabin packing list.

Footwear for the Trails

With trails right outside the door at all of our properties, good footwear matters more than people expect. Bring:

  • Broken-in hiking boots or trail shoes with good tread

  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring downtown Nederland or Black Hawk

  • Wool or synthetic hiking socks (skip the cotton — they hold moisture and cause blisters)

  • Sandals or slides for lounging around the cabin and the hot tub

If you're visiting in winter, add insulated, waterproof boots for snow and ice.

Hot Tub and Relaxation Essentials

Every one of our cabins comes with a private hot tub, so don't forget:

  • Swimsuits

  • Flip-flops or water shoes for wet decks

  • A reusable water bottle — staying hydrated matters even more at altitude

Altitude and Sun Protection

Nederland and Black Hawk both sit well above 8,000 feet, and that altitude sneaks up on visitors who aren't used to it. Pack:

  • Sunscreen (UV exposure is stronger at elevation, even on cloudy days)

  • Sunglasses and a hat with a brim

  • Lip balm with SPF

  • A reusable water bottle you'll actually refill throughout the day

  • Any altitude sickness remedies you prefer, just in case (headaches and light fatigue are common the first day or two)

For Hiking and Outdoor Days

If your trip includes any of the trails around Nederland, Eldora, or Golden Gate Canyon, bring:

  • A daypack for water, snacks, and layers

  • A paper map or downloaded offline trail map (cell service can be spotty in the mountains). All Trails is a wonderful app!

  • Trekking poles if you use them

  • Bear spray or basic wildlife awareness if heading into more remote trails

  • A small first aid kit

For Winter Trips

If you're visiting during ski season, pack (or plan to rent locally):

  • Ski or snowboard gear, or reserve rentals near Eldora Mountain Resort in advance

  • Snow boots with good traction

  • Hand and toe warmers

  • A neck gaiter or balaclava for wind protection

  • Extra layers — winter days at altitude get cold fast once the sun starts to set

What You Don't Need to Bring

All of our cabins come fully stocked with cooking basics, coffee makers, board games, and linens, so you can leave the following at home: kitchen equipment, extra bedding, or entertainment for rainy days. Focus your packing on clothing, outdoor gear, and personal essentials — we've got the rest covered.
